Indonesian Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto, on Wednesday, received a visit from Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif University, Ahmad Muhammad Ahmed Al-Tayeb, at the Defense Ministry Office, Jakarta.
Upon arrival in the afternoon, the Egyptian Islamic scholar and his entourage were personally welcomed by Minister Prabowo who had been waiting at the entrance of the ministry's main building.
Prabowo, spotted wearing a white shirt with a gray suit, engaged in a brief conversation with Al-Tayeb shortly after the scholar disembarked his car.
The two figures also greeted reporters before entering the building of the Defense Ministry to hold a closed-door meeting.
Earlier, on Tuesday (July 9), the grand sheikh also paid a visit to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta.
At around 11 a.m. local time, President Jokowi, State Secretary Pratikno, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi, and Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas greeted Grand Sheikh Al-Tayeb and his delegation at the palace.
Both delegations then proceeded to hold a bilateral meeting.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Minister Marsudi said that Jokowi and Al-Tayeb discussed several issues, including Indonesia-Egypt relations and the conflict in Gaza.
She quoted Jokowi as saying that Egypt has long been among the most popular study destinations for Indonesian academicians, noting that 95 percent of Indonesians residing in Egypt are students
Marsudi said the president told the grand sheikh about his commitment to supporting the establishment of a development center for the existing Al-Azhar branch in Indonesia.
Regarding Israeli aggression in Palestine's Gaza, she underlined that the two figures shared the same view on the need to garner international support for the actualization of a lasting ceasefire and uninterrupted distribution of humanitarian aid to those in need.
The minister also spoke about Al-Tayeb lauding Indonesia for its unrelenting support for peace in Palestine.
"The grand sheikh commended Indonesia's role in the Palestine issue," she stated.
