In a post on Instagram on Wednesday, Jokowi also asked the public to cultivate a love for the kebaya.
"My wife—Iriana—and I invite all Indonesian people to love kebaya as part of our culture," he said.
A kebaya is a traditional upper garment typically worn by women in Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia. The blouse-like piece of clothing is often made from silk, cotton, or lace.
Jokowi said that many types of kebaya from Indonesia will be submitted for UNESCO nomination along with those of four other ASEAN countries.
The kebayas range from the Labuh kebaya of Sumatra, Kutu Baru kebaya of Java, Noni kebaya of North Sulawesi, Nona kebaya of the eastern region of Maluku and Papua, to Kerancang kebaya.
"On this National Kebaya Day, let us preserve the kebaya so that our culture remains and does not become extinct," he remarked.
The President and First Lady Iriana attended the inaugural National Kebaya Day celebration in Jakarta on the same day.
Jokowi was spotted wearing batik clothing in a blend of brown and white, while his wife donned a blue velvet kebaya.
During the event, attendees witnessed a kebaya exhibition performed by a number of public figures, including actress Widyawati.
National Kebaya Day was commemorated for the first time following the issuance of a presidential decree.
