Jakarta (ANTARA) - All officials serving at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) have signed the integrity pact concerning the prevention of online gambling, Kominfo Minister Budi Arie Setiadi stated.

On July 9, 2024, Setiadi instructed the ministry’s Secretary-General, Mira Tayyiba, to ensure that no staff members are involved in online gambling practices.

“According to the latest report from Madam Secretary-General, the entire 5,828 employees at the Kominfo Ministry had signed the integrity pact,” Setiadi remarked in Jakarta on Thursday.

He explained that the signing of the integrity pact is a response to the Financial Transaction Reporting and Analysis Center's (PPATK's) earlier finding that 15 Kominfo officials were suspected of being online gamblers.

Setiadi remarked that the Kominfo Ministry is planning to conduct a routine evaluation to ensure that the government institution is genuinely free from online gambling activities deemed crimes in Indonesia.

He emphasized that the Kominfo staff found to be involved in such crimes will face sanctions determined by applicable regulations.

“The sanctions might take various forms, starting from a stern warning to dismissal,” he pointed out.

Speaking about the 15 Kominfo officials reported by the PPATK, Kominfo Secretary-General Tayyiba made assurance that most of them are currently undergoing legal proceedings.

“A total of 12 suspects have been processed and will face disciplinary punishment as civil servants. As for the rest, we will first conduct an evaluation,” she stated.

The Indonesian government has taken a wide range of measures to combat the increasing popularity of online gambling in the country, including establishing the Online Gambling Eradication Task Force, chaired by Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Coordinating Minister Hadi Tjahjanto.

Furthermore, the government has also decided to sever access to online gambling sites based in Cambodia and the Philippines and intensify efforts to clean Indonesia's digital space from online gambling content.

Setiadi earlier revealed that his ministry had successfully taken down a total of 2,552,749 pieces of online gambling content from July 17, 2023, to July 17, 2024, three folds higher than the 800 thousand pieces blocked during the 2017-2023 period.
