Jakarta (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman, representing President Joko Widodo, visited Vietnam to pay his last respects to Nguyen Phu Trong, the former president of Vietnam who passed away last week.

According to the statement received here on Thursday, Sulaiman expressed his condolences on meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi. Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Denny Abdi accompanied Sulaiman during the meeting.

"Representing the government and the people of the Republic of Indonesia, I express my utmost condolences to the Party, the government, and the people of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the families over the passing away of the national figure Nguyen Phu Trong," Sulaiman stated.

According to Sulaiman, Nguyen, who died on July 19 at the age of 80, had contributed significantly to the advancement of Indonesia-Vietnam relations and paved the way for bolstering the strategic partnership between both nations.

The minister affirmed that the late leader and general secretary of the Communist Party had shown himself to be a great statesman whose leadership and contribution would go down in history.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) expressed his condolences over the demise of Nguyen Phu Trong through his social media account on Sunday (July 21).

The president said that since the two countries engaged in diplomatic relations in 1955, Indonesia and Vietnam have strengthened their strategic partnership in the last decade.

Jokowi also highlighted that Indonesia and Vietnam have made food resilience development one of their focus areas in diplomacy. As a result, the two countries have pushed investment and collaboration in the agriculture and fisheries sectors.
