Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Achievement Center (Puspresnas) is holding the 2024 National Science Olympiad (OSN) as part of an effort to cultivate Indonesia's top talents in the field of science.

According to an Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry statement released on Wednesday, OSN 2024 is being held from August 5–11.

As many as 575 elementary and junior secondary students from 38 provinces and Indonesian Schools Overseas (SILN) from two countries are taking part in OSN.

"Science and technology are the keys for Indonesia's success going forward. Hence, the ministry and all parties are committed to developing Indonesian talents from a young age," the ministry's secretary general, Suharti, said in the statement.

She added that the OSN is a way to find and develop young talents.

"The 2024 OSN participants must be proud as they represent (their regions) and underwent strict selection to compete at the national level," she said.

Suharti noted that the OSN winners will later represent Indonesia at international-level Olympiads, adding that they can potentially get scholarships to pursue their studies.

"Let's compete with sportsmanship and uphold integrity. Keep being motivated and to learn not only in classrooms, but also in your environment. I hope the OSN participants can inspire each other and their juniors in schools to keep developing self potentials," she said.

Meanwhile, the head of Puspresnas, Maria Veronica Irene Herdjiono, said that for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, OSN is being held offline in Jakarta.

"The subjects that are contested in OSN 2024 at the elementary school level are Mathematics and Science. Meanwhile, junior secondary school level (students) will compete in Mathematics, Science, and Social Science," she informed.

She noted that OSN aims to foster talented students with good character who can make international achievements as well as support the equal distribution of achievements.
