Jakarta (ANTARA) - Harvey Moeis, representing PT Refined Bangka Tin, has been indicted for alleged money laundering (TPPU) stemming from corruption in the tin trade managed by PT Timah Tbk between 2015 and 2022.

According to the prosecution, Moeis allegedly concealed the illicit origins of his assets through money laundering.

"The defendant has committed or participated in TPPU with the intent to conceal or disguise the origin of the defendant's assets," public prosecutor Ardito Muwardi said during the indictment reading at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Wednesday.

Specifically, Moeis allegedly misappropriated a portion of the security fees imposed on four private smelters for tin metal processing, he added.

The fees, amounting to US$500 to US$750 per ton, were falsely recorded as corporate social responsibility (CSR) expenditures for the smelters.

The four smelters were CV Venus Inti Perkasa, PT Sariwiguna Binasentosa, PT Stanindo Inti Perkasa, and PT Tinindo Inter Nusa.

Moeis allegedly received the funds through various channels, including bank transfers, cash deposits, and direct payments.

A portion of the funds were reportedly directed to PT Refined Bangka Tin, while the remainder was used for personal enrichment.

The funds were spent on real estate purchases under Moeis' and his wife Sandra Dewi's names, luxury vehicle acquisitions, substantial cash transfers to family members and associates, high-end purchases such as designer goods and jewelry, and rent for a luxury residence in Australia, among other things.

The prosecution contended that Moeis and his accomplice, Helena Lim, a manager at PT Quantum Skyline Exchange, amassed Rp420 billion through the illegal activities.

The corruption and subsequent money laundering caused a staggering loss of Rp300 trillion to the state.

Moeis faces multiple corruption and money laundering charges, carrying potentially severe penalties.
