Safety is a shared responsibility.
Surabaya (ANTARA) - PT Pertamina Patra Niaga has honored Dicky Aprilio for bravely confronting another customer who carelessly discarded a lit cigarette butt at a gas station in Sidoarjo, East Java.

Aprilio was assaulted for his action.

As a token of appreciation, the subsidiary of state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina awarded Aprilio a year's supply of free Pertamax fuel.

"We commend Dicky for prioritizing safety and have recognized him as a 'Consumer Who Cares About Gas Station Safety,'" said Pertamina Patra Niaga corporate secretary Heppy Wulansari on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on August 8, 2024, when a minibus passenger tossed a lit cigarette butt while refueling, which is a safety hazard.

Aprilio's attempt to intervene resulted in a physical altercation.

Wulansari urged all customers to speak up if they witness unsafe behavior at gas stations, adding that "Safety is a shared responsibility."

Area manager communication, relations, and CSR Pertamina Patra Niaga-East Java, Balinus Ahad Rahedi, presented Aprilio with an award certificate.

Aprilio expressed surprise at the recognition, saying that he acted instinctively to prevent a potential accident.

"I warned him twice but he ignored me, so I got off my motorcycle to reiterate the danger of his actions," he recalled.
