Jakarta (ANTARA) - The General Elections Commission (KPU) has confirmed that it will consult the House of Representatives (DPR) to determine follow-up measures regarding the recent Constitutional Court (MK) rulings on regional leaders' elections.

KPU Chairperson Mochammad Afifuddin stated on Thursday that consulting with parliament is essential to avoid repeating the mistakes made during the past presidential election.

"At that time, we failed to conduct the consultation due to several factors. As a result, the DKPP (Electoral Organizer Honorary Council) found us at fault and issued a final warning," Afifuddin said at a press conference here.

He noted that his agency has been in touch with parliament since Wednesday (August 21) to discuss the follow-up and that the KPU will adhere to prevailing procedures to avoid past mistakes.

"With the registration for the regional head election set for August 27 to 29, 2024, we are working to communicate with parliament and prepare the regulation draft," he added.

On Tuesday (August 20), the MK ruled that the threshold for nominating candidates for regional head and deputy regional head posts should be based solely on votes gained in regional elections, rather than seats in regional parliaments.

This decision effectively overrides Article 40(1) of the Law on Regional Leaders' Election, which previously required parties to either gain 25 percent of the vote share or 20 percent of the regional parliaments' seats to nominate candidates.

The court also declared on the same day that the age threshold for regional head candidates -- 30 years for governors and 25 years for district heads and mayors -- should be counted from the day of their registration.
