Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) has urged the House of Representatives (DPR) to adjust the Law on Regional Head Elections (UU Pilkada) in accordance with the Constitutional Court’s (MK) rulings.

“If the MK’s rulings order changes or adjustments, the law-making body must immediately take steps to adjust the law accordingly,” Bawaslu member Puadi said on Saturday.

Bawaslu has also called on the General Elections Commission (KPU) to comply and immediately implement the MK’s rulings, which should be further regulated through KPU Regulation Number 8 of 2024 on regional leaders’ election nominations.

Puadi affirmed that Bawaslu will supervise and participate in a consultation meeting regarding the deliberation on the revision of the KPU regulation in the DPR.

“The MK’s rulings are final and binding in nature,” he said. “It means no legal action can be taken against the a quo decisions, and all parties, including state institutions, are required to respect and implement the MK’s decisions.”

On August 22, DPR Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad announced that the parliament had canceled the plan to revise UU Pilkada, ensuring that the MK’s rulings would be applied.

The cancellation came after thousands of people protested the plan in Jakarta and several other cities earlier that day.

The DPR’s plan to revise the law could significantly affect candidates for the upcoming regional head elections, including Kaesang Pangarep, the youngest son of President Joko Widodo.
