Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Educational Standards, Curriculum, and Assessment Agency (BSKAP) has launched the Climate Change Education Guidebook to strengthen students' resilience in responding to climate change.

According to the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry's press release, received here on Tuesday, the guidebook is part of the Merdeka Curriculum and is expected to assist in building education towards climate change awareness and ways to address it.

Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister Nadiem Anwar Makarim emphasized that every individual has a responsibility to implement an environmentally friendly lifestyle for the future of the Earth.

Hence, to this end, he underscored the importance of preparing members of the next generation who are aware of the green economy.

"In line with the Merdeka (Independent) in Learning, climate change is offered as a theme option of P5 (character building subject) and not an obligation," Makarim stated.

If the school chooses the climate change theme, he advised that its implementation utilize the assets the school owns so as to not burden parents with additional costs.

On the same occasion, BSKAP Head Anindito Aditomo underscored the importance of early understanding and awareness of climate change, which is triggered by human activities.

He believes that if understanding of climate change is instilled from an early age, children can play an active role in responding to climate change.

Meanwhile, he noted that the ongoing climate crisis will deeply impact the younger generation, which will affect their learning outcomes and well-being.

"We use the Merdeka Curriculum's RAMAH (FRIENDLY) principles and approaches in climate change education, namely Relevant, Effective, Based on Science, Real Actions, and Holistic," he explained.

This guidebook was compiled under a collaboration since June 2023 by involving ministries and agencies, local governments, academicians, school principals, teachers and educational workers, and NGOs.
