Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), Basuki Hadimuljono, on Wednesday informed that the non-cash contactless toll transaction technology, or multi-lane free flow (MLFF), will be implemented in stages.

"The transition from card payment to contactless will not be 100 percent implemented at first. Later, it will be fully shifted," he said.

Hadimuljono added that the gradual implementation of the technology will start with the application of single lane free flow (SLFF) and a barrier system at the Bali-Mandara Toll Road this year.

Meanwhile, the PUPR Ministry's director general of infrastructure financing, Triono Junoasmono, said that his party will negotiate with its Hungarian counterpart regarding MLFF.

"With the shift from MLFF to SLFF, we will carry out negotiation later. Hopefully, we can implement it with a transition method," he added.

SLFF is a non-stop payment system for every toll transaction lane. Its implementation is a stage in the rollout of MLFF, which will be applied on all toll roads in Indonesia later.

The MLFF system uses global navigation satellite system (GNSS) technology and carries out transactions through the Cantas application, which is integrated with ERI (Electronic Registration and Identification) data or vehicle ownership data owned by the Indonesian Police Traffic Corps.

The purpose of implementing contactless toll transactions is to improve toll road services for the public.

MLFF is expected to reduce delays on toll roads and cut travel time, thereby increasing the competitiveness of the road network system and allowing the concept of fair pricing, namely charging of rates based on the route taken by road users.

The implementation of the MLFF system will require some discipline, including in terms of using the system by utilizing the global positioning satellite (GPS) system.

Road users will need to download software, register, and then make a deposit to use the system.
