Deli Serdang, North Sumatra (ANTARA) - The East Java contingent solidified its position at the top of the Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON) medal standings after bowlers Ryan Lalisang and Billy Muhammad Islam clinched gold in the men's doubles event.

Based on PON's official website, as of 4:40 p.m. Western Indonesia Standard Time, Team East Java was perched at the top of the rankings table, with a collection of 37 gold, 18 silver, and 16 bronze medals.

In the final match at the Hj. Rayati Syafrin Bowling Arena in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, on Wednesday, the two had to go all-out to defeat host representatives Oscar and Hardy Rachmadian in three games.

Under the best-of-three format, each team emerged victorious in the first and second game, forcing them to play a decisive additional game.

Eventually, East Java's Ryan and Billy managed to bag a gold medal despite having to weather the home supporters' vociferous chants that tested their level of concentration.

Earlier, on the same day, the duo earned their place in the final match after prevailing over West Java's bowlers Andyka Gamaputra and Adhiguna Widiantoro in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Oscar and Hardy bested Dony Rahmadiano and Indra Lesmana, bowlers from the other host province, Aceh.

The beaten teams in the semi-finals then shared the bronze medal.

Ryan and Billy's victory added yet another gold medal from bowling to the East Java contingent's tally.

Female bowler Shinta Ceysaria Yunita had earlier presented East Java with a gold medal after defeating North Sumatra's representative Nadia Pramanik Nuramalina in the women's singles event.

The qualifying round of the men's doubles event began on Tuesday (September 10), with 10 provinces vying for medals, namely East Java, North Sumatra, East Kalimantan, Aceh, West Java, Jakarta, West Sumatra, Banten, Riau, and South Sumatra.
