Jakarta (ANTARA) - An environmental non-profit organization researcher, Talitha Aurellia Alfiansyah, emphasized that fair mitigation efforts are needed to handle the climate crisis, as vulnerable coastal communities in Indonesia unfairly face its impact.

"Fair climate action must be carried out because, based on previous studies, it is said that the impact of the climate crisis is disproportionate," Alfiansyah stated in a discussion held here on Tuesday.

Alfiansyah referred to a study by a non-profit organization, Oxfam, that states between 1990 and 2015, the world's richest 10 percent were responsible for 52 percent of the global carbon emissions, while the poorest 50 percent contributed seven percent of the worldwide total.

Alfiansyah also pointed out that urban areas are highly vulnerable to global warming. These areas include the Jakarta region, especially the northern coastal area.

She said the Oxfam study shows that areas most affected by the climate crisis in Jakarta are those inhabited by the urban poor.

In contrast, the urban poor is the group that contributes the least greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which is one of the main factors causing the climate crisis.

This proves that the impact of the climate crisis is unfairly felt by the poor, thereby making them the most vulnerable group.

"Mitigation actions and adaptation efforts in Jakarta's coastal areas are important to be carried out," Alfiansyah emphasized.

She highlighted that the Jakarta provincial government had taken several mitigation steps to anticipate climate risks and held related discussions.

She explained that Gubernatorial Regulation Number 90 of 2021 concerning the Climate-Resilient and Low-Carbon Development Plan constituted one of the efforts by the provincial government.
