"The fire likely started due to a short circuit," said Isnawa Adji, the agency's head.
At least 95 personnel, supported by 19 fire trucks, were deployed to extinguish the blaze, which started around 06.25 a.m. local time.
Firefighters were assisted by BPBD staff, the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), and the Jakarta Health Office's Ambulance Unit.
Jakarta has experienced several deadly and catastrophic fires over the past three years.
On the evening of April 18, 2024, seven people died in a fire at a shop building in the Mampang Prapatan neighborhood of South Jakarta. Their bodies were discovered in a second-story room of the building. The fire also injured five others.
On March 3, 2023, a major fire at the Plumpang Pertamina Depot in the Koja sub-district of North Jakarta claimed 33 lives.
Another fire on October 22, 2022, razed several homes in Pademangan sub-district, North Jakarta, leaving three people dead. The victims included a 28-year-old woman and her two children, aged 10 and 5, according to local police.
On February 26, 2022, three people died in a fire that engulfed two buildings in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta. The victims were a 37-year-old woman, her three-year-old son, and a three-month-old baby, according to the local fire department.
