Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) is reinforcing its commitment to achieve net zero emissions more rapidly, targeting a reduction of up to 978 kilotons of CO2 by 2030.

A key step in this achievement is the addition of a new fleet featuring dual fuel technology and the use of environmentally friendly green fuels. This target was announced by PIS's Director of Business Planning, Eka Suhendra, during the Gastech 2024 forum held in Texas, United States.

This long-term decarbonization target aligns with the plan to reach net zero emissions by 2050. This move is in accordance with major initiatives set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Paris Agreement regarding climate change. The net zero target places the company ten years ahead of the Indonesian government's target set for 2060.

"We recognize that the shipping industry significantly contributes to global carbon emissions, particularly from ship fuel combustion. Therefore, we are committed to reducing these negative impacts by implementing various innovations and the latest technologies, including adopting green fuels such as LPG, LNG, and ammonia," said Eka.

More than 50% of the vessels operated by PIS are now capable of using biofuels or green fuels. PIS is also a pioneer in the use of dual fuel vessels, with six ships in its fleet utilizing LPG and LNG as alternative green fuels.

A total of 40 ships in the PIS fleet have been equipped with energy-saving devices that can improve fuel efficiency by 3-20%. Additionally, PIS has implemented comprehensive power limitation and voyage management strategies to reduce emissions.

Eka added that the PIS fleet has received international certification as proof of the high quality and standards applied by PIS in implementing sustainability policies, both in terms of business and operations.

"More than 30% of our fleet has also obtained EEXI (Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index) and CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator) certificates in accordance with IMO regulations and standards. These steps reflect PIS's commitment to contributing to sustainability and reducing environmental impacts in the shipping industry," Eka stated.

Global Head of LNG at Fearnleys, Per Christian Fett, emphasized the importance of regulations that provide incentives for industry players to drive innovation in green fuel use. This is essential to accelerate the transition to more sustainable solutions amid the increasingly urgent challenges of climate change.

"Many new technologies require significant upfront investment as well as in-depth research and development (R&D). Support in the form of grants or government assistance is crucial to facilitate companies' transition to more environmentally friendly and efficient solutions," Christian remarked.

As a transitional energy source for emission reduction, Christian also supports the use of LNG. "LNG not only offers environmental benefits but is also a more economical choice. Its use can significantly reduce CO2 emissions as well as other pollutant particles. The focus should not only be on CO2 but also on the entire emissions chain."
