Jakarta (ANTARA) - Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar stated that the Indonesian nation owes much to santris, or students of Islamic boarding schools, for their notable contribution to the country's struggle for independence.

"We are obliged to protect every single inch of land in this republic. The Indonesian nation must thank santris because it was their intelligence, tenacity, and prayers that brought Indonesia to Independence," he remarked in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Speaking during a roll call held in commemoration of 2024 Santri Day at the Proclamation Monument, Umar highlighted that Santri Day serves as a momentum to remember and take notes from the santris' role in fighting for Indonesia's independence and defending it.

The minister underlined that among the testament of the santris' fierce resistance against colonial powers was the Jihad Resolution announced on October 22, 1945, by Hasyim Asy'ari, one of Indonesia's most influential Islamic clerics.

He noted that the resolution determined that it was mandatory for all Muslims, regardless of gender and age and whether armed or not, to fight against colonial forces found within a 94-kilometer radius.

The issuance of the Jihad Resolution successfully moved santris and people, in general, to take part in defending Indonesia's independence declared on August 17, 1945, he stated.

Umar further contributed to the resolution of the Indonesians' fierce resistance against foreign adversary forces in the Battle of Surabaya on November 10, 1945, which would be designated as Hero Day in Indonesia.

"The Jihad Resolution of October 22, 1945, is inseparable from the event that took place on November 10, 1945. Without the resolution, the 10 November battle might not have happened," he stressed.

This year's Santri Day raises "Continuing the Struggle to Welcome the Future" as its theme. The commemorative roll call, which began at 7 a.m. local time, drew participation from santris across Indonesia.
