Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) have agreed to study the optimization of food registration using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

"This collaboration is a continuation of the previous study conducted on BPOM's readiness in adopting AI and the obstacles faced by entrepreneurs in food registration," Head of the BRIN's Macroeconomic and Financial Research Center, Zamroni, said in a statement released by his office on Saturday.

According to Zamroni, the partnership is the result of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) inked by the two parties in 2022 on research and innovation in medicine and food to increase the competitiveness of the local industry.

He said that food is an integral part of the sustainable development strategy of Indonesia.

"Food is one of President Prabowo Subianto's flagship programs. Food security is a priority to ensure that everyone has access to sufficient, nutritious, and safe food," he added.

Furthermore, research and innovation have a vital role in supporting the food security program, for which, BRIN and BPOM are responsible for assessing food registration, he continued.

Zamroni informed that BRIN is responsible for conducting in-depth research on various aspects of food safety and quality. Meanwhile, BPOM has been asked to focus on supervising the safety of food products circulating in the community.

"By using AI, we can analyze Big Data related to food products, distribution, and consumption more accurately," he added.

Meanwhile, the deputy for processed food supervision at the BPOM, Elin Herlina, said that the agency has been given the authority to supervise and regulate processed food — from the stage of processing to distribution.

The supervision is meant to ensure the quality of food products circulating in the community and involves issuing distribution permits for processed food, she added.

"BPOM ensures that processed food circulating in the community has met the requirements for safety and quality, including the conformity of the information submitted," Herlina said.
