Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Industry Ministry is aiming to scale up exports of Indonesian-made motorcycles to increase the state's foreign exchange and create new jobs.

"We expect the export of motorcycles to increase year by year as by now, we are the 11th-largest exporter of motorcycles," Deputy Industry Minister Faisol Riza said while opening the 2024 Indonesia Motorcycle Show (IMOS) in Tangerang, Banten, on Wednesday.

More than five million people are currently employed in the principal and supporting industries of the national motorcycle industry ecosystem. Hence, increasing motorcycle production and exports will create more jobs, he explained.

According to data from the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), 399,989 Indonesian-made motorcycles were exported in the January–September 2024 period, and the figure for September alone stood at 51,944.

Riza opined that Indonesia's motorcycle manufacturing industry, including for environmentally friendly motorcycles, is developing significantly. He said that currently, 55 motorcycle producers in Indonesia are manufacturing up to 1.15 million units annually.

9market is expanding. Residents are also increasingly aware that using electric motorcycles is becoming a necessity and is accepted as a lifestyle," the deputy minister said.

He affirmed that the government will continue to encourage the use of electric motorcycles by providing Rp7 million (USD444.7) in subsidies for every motorcycle purchase.

"Some 22 producers are participating in this program," he noted.

Riza said that he expects the electric motorcycle subsidy to help push investment, industry productivity, and competitiveness, as well as expand the industry ecosystem to allow the creation of more jobs.
