The Maung SUV will be the official vehicle of all Cabinet ministers and echelon 1 officials, as instructed by President Prabowo Subianto, he said after a meeting with Commission XIII of the House of Representatives at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday.
"The program requires the production of 10 thousand units (of Maung SUVs) in the future. For the first 100 days of government service, it is expected to produce 5 thousand units and the rest will continue," Putranto informed.
He said that the sports utility vehicle, originally a tactical vehicle for soldiers, now has a domestic component level of 70 percent.
"The 30 percent (other components) are from Korea, Mercedes, SsangYong, basic frame, engine," he added.
According to Minister of State Secretary, Prasetyo Hadi, Cabinet members will use the Maung SUV made by PT Pindad as President Prabowo is keen to promote local automotive products.
"Yes, of course, the spirit is that we must have our own cars," he said at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday.
A number of ministers, including Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni, Public Housing Minister Maruarar Sirait, and Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions Minister Yandri Susanto, have expressed their readiness to use the locally-made SUV to support their government duties.
