In a DPR statement received here on Friday, Maharani stated that the government must identify the issues plaguing the national textile industry, which is a labor-intensive industry, and seek solutions to revive it.
According to her, state policies must strengthen businesses in the textile and garment industry, both large-scale businesses and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), to help them recover.
"We must also consider today's market conditions. The regulations that we create must not put a burden on local companies while benefiting foreign companies. Because, if the business is sluggish, it can affect the workers and the supporting sectors," she said.
This, Maharani added, is essential because the textile industry absorbs millions of workers and they also have a big contribution to the country's gross domestic product (GDP).
"Business competition must run healthily so that it does not harm the working class," she said.
On October 21, 2024, Sritex, one of Indonesia's textile giants, was declared bankrupt by the Semarang Commercial Court.
The Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Industry are planning to hold a coordinating meeting to discuss issues in the textile industry.
"It will be discussed with the Ministry of Industry next week," director general of foreign trade at the Ministry of Trade, Isy Karim, confirmed here on Wednesday.
He informed that one of the issues that will be discussed at the upcoming meeting will be the Trade Minister's Regulation Number 8 of 2024, which is considered to have affected the business continuity of the textile industry.
Regarding the revision of the regulation, he said that it will only be considered after discussions with the Ministry of Industry.
