Ambon (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Cockatoo Conservation Association (KKI) planted 1,200 mangrove seedlings in Eti Village, West Seram District, Maluku, to preserve the environment in the area.

"This activity is a collaboration with students from the Biology Study Program at the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Pattimura University, as part of the 2020 Field Study," KKI Chair Dudi Nandika said on Saturday.

He explained that the planting involved the university's students and staff, as well as officials from Eti Village and the West Seram Forest Management Unit (KPH).

Planting mangroves is crucial, as their strong root systems help protect coastal areas from erosion caused by seawater and waves.

Mangroves also serve as habitats, feeding grounds, and breeding areas for various marine species, including shrimp, crabs, fish, and shellfish.

They additionally provide habitats for birds, monitor lizards, and crocodiles, and play a vital role in absorbing water pollutants, helping to maintain water quality.

Nandika explained that the planting program aims to encourage faster reforestation and regeneration through mangrove nurseries and planting, which can provide food and nesting resources for parrots and other animals.

"Mangroves can also provide sustainable benefits to the community," he added.

He noted that mangroves absorb more carbon than highland tropical forests. Mangrove fruit can also be processed into various food products and industrial raw materials.

"Through a community development approach, we can protect ecosystems and reduce the risk of species extinction due to habitat loss or degradation," Nandika stated.

He added that this program sends a strong conservation message that mangroves have intrinsic value and must be protected.

"This message can reach other communities and illustrate the program's success," he concluded.
