"For the future curriculum update, we are planning to add AI and coding as optional subjects in schools that can implement them," he remarked on the sidelines of the Coordination Meeting on the Evaluation of Primary and Secondary Education Policies here on Monday.
The minister explained that the inclusion of these subjects will depend on each school's readiness in terms of information and communication technology (ICT) facilities and infrastructure.
Given that not all schools have advanced ICT devices and high-speed internet, these subjects will only be optional, Mu'ti clarified.
He expressed hope that these new subjects will support the Red and White Cabinet's vision of enhancing education quality and preparing future generations to compete on a global stage through digitalization.
At Monday's coordination meeting, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, in his remarks, called on the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to pursue the implementation of AI and coding subjects in elementary and junior high schools.
"We need golden generations to achieve the Golden Indonesia (vision). We want more coding experts, AI experts, machine learning experts, and others," he highlighted.
