During a focus group discussion (FGD) here on Wednesday, he appealed to all regional heads to build shared understanding on smooth transportation.
He deemed that a common understanding on the matter is necessary for creating a well-integrated transportation system in Indonesia.
"Transportation must be understood as a very important part of driving the regional economy. We must have the same perspective," he said in a statement released by the ministry.
According to Sugiarto, a well-connected transportation system would have a significant impact on increasing regional original revenue (PAD).
If the transportation system in a region is problematic, then the cash flow in the region would also be disrupted, he explained.
"There have been many studies on (financial) losses caused by underdeveloped transportation," he said.
However, he reminded that the development of the modes of transportation in regions needs to be studied first because each region has different capacities and needs.
For example, he said, regions need to carry out discussions and further research if they wish to emulate the TransJakarta bus rapid transit system of Jakarta to ensure efficient implementation.
Some regions are imitating the transportation systems of other regions, although it does not suit the local demographics, he added.
