Indonesia needs to exert greater efforts to echo narratives on female heroes to introduce them to a broader population and declare them as national heroes, Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) Minister Arifah Fauzi stated.
Speaking during a national dialogue with stakeholders of PPPA services from 11 regions in Jakarta on Thursday, she highlighted that Indonesia has plenty of women figures who made notable contributions to the nation's struggle for independence.
"We need to work hard to spread narratives on them because, in actuality, we have a plethora of female national heroes. Maybe we just have not collected data on them," the minister remarked.
Fauzi further expressed optimism that by collecting data on female heroes, the PPPA Ministry would be able to put forward more names to be declared as national heroes.
Earlier, on November 13, the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) spotlighted three female figures that are deemed deserving of national hero status, namely Ratu Ageng Tegalrejo, S. K. Trimurti, and R. A. Soetartinah.
Ratu Ageng Tegalrejo was the wife of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I of Yogyakarta. She established the Sultanate Female Warrior Corps, known as the Esti Langenkusumo Warriors.
The corps provided support to Prince Diponegoro's rebellion against the Dutch Colonial Rule. Diponegoro was Tegalrejo's great-grandson, who was named a national hero by the Second President Soeharto.
Meanwhile, S. K. Trimurti was a journalist and activist who served as Indonesia's first minister of labor. She was bestowed several honorary medals, including the Satyalancana Struggle for Independence and Mahaputera Star.
R. A. Soetartinah was known as the wife of one of Indonesia's most popular education figures and the first minister of national education, Ki Hajar Dewantara.
Soetartinah founded the Wanita Taman Siswa, or Garden of Pupils, an organization that aims to enhance educational services for women.
