Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer affirmed that their countries are on the same page regarding several matters related to global and bilateral security.

The two leaders' shared view was put forward in the Joint Statement on a New Strategic Partnership between the Republic of Indonesia and the United Kingdom, which was released on www.gov.uk after Thursday's meeting in London and cited in Jakarta on Friday.

The protracted war between Ukraine and Russia was among the global security concerns discussed during their bilateral meeting.

“In the context of the war in Ukraine, we underscored our commitment to uphold international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter,” they noted in the joint statement.

Prabowo and Starmer shared the same view that just and sustainable peace should be pursued in accordance with the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity “and be built on the inclusive involvement of and dialogue between all parties.”

In their joint statement, the two leaders also touched upon nuclear energy in relation to the war, concurring that nuclear installations should be allowed to operate in a safe and secure manner according to the principles promoted by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Furthermore, the president and prime minister agreed that "all prisoners of war must be released in accordance with international law."

The two leaders also called for an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation of the conflict in Palestine and Lebanon while pointing to the importance of ensuring safe and uninterrupted passage for humanitarian aid.

Apart from discussing security in the traditional sense, both figures also mentioned global food security, sharing the same view that free, full, and safe commercial navigation is the key to actualizing such security.

Regarding the Indonesia-UK bilateral ties, Prabowo and Starmer agreed to bolster their countries' cooperation in defense and security by implementing a new 2+2 foreign-defense dialogue, strengthening partnership on cybersecurity, and sustaining collaboration on counter-terrorism efforts.

Touching upon the need to further the two countries' defense industrial partnership, the leaders agreed to advance Indonesia's Merah Putih General Purpose Frigate Program.

"We anticipate growing this partnership over the coming years to further strengthen Indonesia’s naval capabilities as well as our respective defense industries, supporting high-value jobs and skills in both countries," the statement noted.
