P2MI Minister Abdul Kadir Karding stated here on Friday that all village heads and officials need to be educated about the placement and protection of migrant workers.
He explained that this measure aims to prevent prospective migrant workers from illegally departing to their destination country.
According to Karding, residents keen on working abroad must first obtain a recommendation letter from the village government.
The recommendation letter is issued in line with the procedure for placement of migrant workers overseas.
"Other than the regulation, we must carry out campaign to all village heads, officials, and neighborhood units. That way, they can record residents who leave to work abroad. Education about this is important in villages," he explained.
He also expected the village governments' involvement to be based on the law and encouraged people to learn about the legal procedures for working abroad. Hence, by following the official procedure, people can avoid becoming victims of employment fraud.
Karding explained that some migrant workers fall victim to employment fraud due to ignorance of the legal procedure.
"Through the official path, they must hold skill certification and receive training in each field," the minister emphasized.
He also advised people against being easily lured by suspicious offers to work abroad that are not based on the official procedure.
The P2MI Ministry had earlier stated that it would intensify cooperation with the International Labor Organization (ILO) to improve the protection of Indonesian migrant workers.
Karding noted that the Indonesian government is seeking support from various parties to address multiple problems related to migrant workers' protection.
