Solo, Central Java (ANTARA) - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated that the government facilitates the public to conduct early cancer screening through services available at community health centers.

"Early cancer detection is included in President Prabowo Subianto's screening program," he remarked while opening the 3rd Soeradji International Conference in Solo, Central Java, on Saturday.

Hence, he underscored the need for every community health center to have early cancer screening facilities.

According to the minister, this effort is important, considering public awareness of cancer is still low.

"Every time I visit the hospital, the (number of) cancer (cases) is already advanced. The high fatality rate is (related to those) likely to die, (thereby) indicating a low level of awareness," the minister remarked.

Sadikin noted that by conducting early detection at community health centers, treatment can be carried out more optimally.

Hence, he plans to check the readiness of community health centers in the regions regarding early screening services, including for cancer.

"I want to check the readiness of community health centers in this matter. The blood test equipment can check the cancer indication in a patient," he remarked.

He highlighted that cancer, which tends to elicit fear and concern among many, can be treated effectively, especially when detected early.

During the meeting with the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) on October 31, Sadikin noted that health screening could be much more effective in curbing the increasing costs of curative efforts or treatment.

He admitted that cancer treatment is not thoroughly covered by the national health insurer (BPJS Health). However, he ensured that the agency covered the basic treatment.

This screening program is included in the Quick Win programs in Prabowo's administraton, with two other programs being hospital construction in regions and the treatment of tuberculosis.
