Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Commission on Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan) has underlined the need to acknowledge and strengthen women's role in climate change mitigation and adaptation, both through local knowledge and community action.

"They are not only victims but are also actors that can bring innovative solutions in facing the crisis," deputy chair of Komnas Perempuan, Mariana Amiruddin, said.

She made the remarks at the launch of the commission's report on the "Results of Mapping the Situation of Women and Special Attention to Vulnerable Groups in the Context of the Climate Crisis" here on Monday.

She noted that the impact of climate change is not only felt harder by women and other vulnerable groups but also worsens existing inequality.

She further said that during disasters, women are often at the forefront as caregivers, water seekers, and household providers, but their access to resources, education, and decision-making remains extremely limited.

"We cannot deny that climate crisis worsens the vulnerability," she added.

According to Amiruddin, women face more complex challenges, ranging from threats to survival, including the risk of gender-based violence as a domino effect of difficulty in access to livelihood sources, to issues in accessing essential reproductive health services.

The mapping of the condition of women in the context of disasters by Komnas Perempuan not only provides a real picture of the challenges faced by women but also explores their potential and the solutions that can be improved to make more inclusive policies, programs, and collaborations.

"The results of the mapping are expected to be an important foothold to develop strategic measures, both at national and regional levels, that are responsive to the needs of women and vulnerable groups in facing the climate crisis," she added.
