His statement was conveyed to the press by Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti at the Presidential Palace complex here on Tuesday. He delivered the statement after attending a meeting with the President.
"Related to (zoning-based) PPDB, the President has assigned us to deepen the study of its implementation," he said.
He informed that the study on the zoning-based PPDB policy will also involve heads of education offices, education experts, stakeholders, and education organizers such as schools.
Minister Mu'ti said that the results of the study will be reported to President Prabowo for further direction.
He added that the final decision on the zoning-based PPDB implementation will be discussed and determined at the upcoming Cabinet meeting. "The decision will be made in the Cabinet session," he continued.
Talks regarding the abolition of the zoning system for new student admissions at schools resurfaced after Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka asked Minister Mu'ti to end the zoning policy.
At the Muhammadiyah Youth Tanwir National Meeting in Jakarta some time ago, VP Gibran said that the zoning system must be done away with because it is seen to be hindering access to education.
Meanwhile, education is considered key for building a quality generation and for the realization of the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.
In addition to criticizing the zoning system, VP Gibran also highlighted the importance of strengthening young people's skills in the digital field, such as in coding, programming, and digital marketing, so that Indonesia does not lag other countries in such skills.
