Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto emphasized the strategic role of developing an electronic vehicle (EV) ecosystem for the economy and environment.

To this end, Hartarto affirmed that the government would continue to support the development of the EV industry in Indonesia.

"Over time, there will be more and more (EV products), and the prices will be more competitive. This is important to reduce carbon emissions, as committed by the Indonesian government,” Airlangga remarked at the Gaikindo Jakarta Auto Week (GJAW) 2024 in Tangerang on Sunday (Dec 1).

The event, which took place from November 22 to December 1, 2024, has become a platform for various vehicle producers to showcase their best products.

At least 27 passenger car brands and 12 motorcycle brands participated in the exhibition, including newcomers Zeekr and Aletra, making their debut in Indonesia.

During the event, Hartarto lauded the participation of local brands in the EV industry.

The minister acknowledged that the Aletra L8 electric car is a real example of the success of a competitive Indonesian brand, both in terms of quality and price.

"If the price is affordable, it might be attractive to the public. And what is more, the second note (is that) this car uses an Indonesian brand. Hence, we will continue to promote Indonesian brands with local content that competes with existing ones,” Airlangga noted.

He also emphasized that the government will continue to support the automotive industry, especially the EV industry, with various policies, including incentives for luxury goods' value-added tax for EVs.

According to the minister, innovation from industry players is the key to the development of the EV ecosystem.

Closing his statement, Airlangga also expressed optimism about the future of the electric-based automotive industry in Indonesia.

"Well, the automotive (industry) is consumer-based, but with this exhibition, I see that many prices can be competitive. Hence, I am quite optimistic," he concluded.

GJAW 2024 is one of the important catalysts for the growth of the national automotive industry, especially in accelerating the transition to environmentally friendly vehicles.

With strategic policies and close collaboration between the government and industry players, the transition to EV is expected to not only accelerate the reduction of carbon emissions but also support inclusive and sustainable economic growth towards the vision of Golden Indonesia 2045.
