Jakarta (ANTARA) - Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) received a courtesy call from the Peruvian Ambassador to Indonesia, Luis Tsuboyama, to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, especially in food security.

"Peru is experiencing a development in their agriculture sector, such as exporting asparagus and mangoes to the United States," chair of Commission I, Utut Adianto, noted in a statement issued by his office on Tuesday.

"We can learn from each other. This exchange of expertise will be beneficial," he added.

The courtesy call took place ahead of the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Peru in 2025.

Adianto said that such cooperation would be beneficial, especially for the agriculture sector, since the two countries share similarities in terms of income per capita though they have significantly different populations.

"Peru's income per capita is US$7,300 while Indonesia has US$4,800 income per capita. However, our population is seven times higher than them," he informed.

Besides food security, the two countries also discussed potential cooperation in the mining sector, especially lithium, the main material used in the production of electric vehicle batteries.

"Lithium, or simply similar to nickel, is another opportunity for cooperation. We can direct our expertise to this sector to expand bilateral relations," Adianto said.

He then highlighted Peru's membership of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

"Peru has become a member of the OECD and Ambassador Tsuboyama is one of the figures pioneering this achievement when he served as director general at the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His experience can be a lesson for us," he added.

Meanwhile, Tsuboyama informed that his visit aimed to strengthen bilateral relations, especially ahead of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

"We are finalizing negotiations for a bilateral agreement to improve business relations between Indonesia and Peru. As part of this commemoration, we are also planning various cultural activities, such as a photography exhibition," he said.

The cultural activities will be held in several regions of Indonesia, such as Makassar, Sumatra, and Bali, he added.
