Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has secured several cooperation commitments from 20 Japanese businesspersons from the Jakarta Japan Club (JJC) in strategic energy, reforestation, and food crop projects.

This was conveyed by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto after accompanying Prabowo to a meeting with the Japanese businesspersons at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Friday.

"The meeting is related to the Japanese investment commitment from the Japan-Indonesia Association delegation," Hartarto informed.

He said that Japan, as one of the major investors in Indonesia, is committed to increasing investment in various projects, including the continuation of the Abadi Gas Field, Masela Block, in Arafuru Sea, south of the waters of Yamdena Island, between Tanimbar Islands and Southwest Maluku Districts.

The President has ordered the relevant ministries and institutions to monitor the continuation of the Masela Block gas project so that any obstacles can be resolved with the relevant investors.

Hartarto said that the JJC is committed to increasing its investment by USD21 billion based on the Masela block development plan that has been rolling since 2000.

The Japanese businesses expressed the hope that the project would start running next year and be completed in the next few years.

Besides the Masela Block, Japan is also committed to supporting the development of Patimban Port in Subang District, West Java, which is being projected as a balancer of logistics flows between the western, central, and eastern regions of Indonesia.

"Followed by petrochemicals cooperation as well," he added.

Furthermore, cooperation in the land management and forestry sectors is also being explored.

According to the minister, Japanese company Sumitomo has teamed up with Indonesia for reforestation projects in Central Kalimantan and West Kalimantan, covering an area of 130 thousand hectares.

The projects focus on replanting perennials for timber needs to improve the ecosystem. The success of the projects is expected to be the first step for the development of food crops in the future.

For agricultural land management, Sumitomo has partnered with a local entrepreneur to develop a food estate in Central Kalimantan, Hartarto informed.

The meeting on Friday was attended by several Indonesian ministers, namely Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono; Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita; and Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Erick Thohir.

The Japanese delegation comprised the CEOs of Sumitomo Forestry, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, and Mitsubishi Corporation, as well as representatives of institutions such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia.
