At the "Assessing Opportunities and Challenges in ASEAN-GCC Interactions" event held here on Tuesday, head of the Foreign Affairs Ministry's Foreign Policy Strategy Agency, Yayan Ganda Hayat Mulyana, said that maritime security is one such critical area.
He explained that ASEAN-GCC collaboration is necessary to ensure maritime security, fight against sea piracy, realize navigation freedom, and increase maritime awareness.
He said that the efforts to build maritime security are aimed at supporting regional stability.
The second critical area for ASEAN-GCC cooperation, he pointed out, is related to anti-terrorism and cybersecurity. He said that both regions face a constant threat of terrorism.
Next are climate change and climate security. Mulyana stressed that to address existing coastal threats, such as rising sea levels, ASEAN and GCC must commit to utilizing their resources and experts to effectively and substantially reduce climate-related risks.
"ASEAN and GCC are at the crossroads of a changing global landscape. By utilizing our perspective, we are embracing cooperation in the strategic pharmaceuticals field. We can secure a more stable, prosperous, and resilient future for our region and the world," he said.
Furthermore, he added that the ASEAN-GCC economic partnership has undergone significant expansion over the years.
Earlier, at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Special Meeting in April 2024, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, and Malaysian Prime Minister (PM) Anwar Ibrahim agreed to propose collaboration between ASEAN and GCC as a new economic power.
Hartarto stressed that the agriculture, energy, and tourism sectors are essential sectors, considering that the two regions have their unique characteristics. (INE)
