Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) aims to build 96 public kitchens to support the government's Free Nutritious Meals program for students.

Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali stated on Friday that each public kitchen will prepare up to 4,000 portions of meals.

"We will assess how many schools are within a range of about 3 kilometers from the public kitchens," Ali said.

He noted there is a need for cross-agency collaboration to support the free meals program.

Eighteen public kitchens have already been set up in cities with naval bases, including Jakarta, Surabaya, Malang, Makassar, Lampung, and Batam.

Ali said that the TNI-AL will also use existing unused lots to build the public kitchens.

On Friday, the TNI-AL conducted a free nutritious meals program trial at 18 locations simultaneously. The trial was joined by more than 1,000 students from schools near naval bases.

"I have also tried the meal myself, and according to the National Nutrition Agency, the nutrition in the meal is fulfilling," Ali said.

He added that each serving, costing Rp10,000 (around US$0.61), provides complete nutrition.
