Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT) Commissioner General Eddy Hartono stated that Indonesia secured a low-impact rating on the 2024 Global Terrorism Index (GTI), an improvement from its earlier medium-impact status in 2023.

"In the 2024 Global Terrorism Index (GTI) report, Indonesia experienced an improvement in the security situation as indicated by a decrease in ranking, from 24 to 31," he stated in a press conference on Monday.

The GTI places a country with the most terrorism threat in the highest ranking.

According to Hartono, the improvement in security conditions indicated by the index categorizes Indonesia as a country with a low impact by terrorism.

He noted that this achievement is the result of effective synergy between BNPT, related ministries and institutions, as well as law enforcement officers.

"This is the result of our collaboration for terrorism prevention and mitigation," he remarked.

In addition, he drew attention to the fact that Indonesia's ranking in the 2024 Global Peace Index had also increased, thereby classifying it as a peaceful country.

"Our ranking increased five places in the 2024 Global Peace Index report with the high peace category," he stated.

He is optimistic that the improvement in the GTI and Global Peace Index can help Indonesia stabilize its security and economic climate.

According to the agency head, stable economic conditions can be achieved if the security situation is stable.

"These achievements are expected to affect the economic and security climate because security is the basis," Hartono explained.

Earlier, BNPT Deputy for International Cooperation Andhika Chrisnayudhanto stated that the improvement in the GTI ranking was also followed by a decrease in the number of terrorism-related deaths in Indonesia.

"The number of deaths due to terrorism in Indonesia decreased by 22 percent in 2023, resulting in zero deaths from terrorism that year," he stated.
