Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Police resolved 36,174 narcotics cases or 84.47 percent of the total 42,824 cases registered in 2024.

This was conveyed by chief of the National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, at a year-end briefing in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He informed that while investigating the cases, police managed to seize various types of drugs as evidence, ranging from crystal methamphetamine and marijuana to hashish, that were ready to be distributed. Their value was estimated at Rp8.6 trillion (US$516 billion), he added.

"The success of preventing the distribution of drug evidence can save the lives of 40.4 million people from drug abuse," Prabowo said.

To optimize law enforcement efforts against drug crimes involving a variety of modus operandi and networks, police have established cooperation with relevant ministries/institutions, both at home and abroad.

During the briefing, Prabowo outlined four prominent drug busts in 2024. The first case involved a clandestine drug laboratory in Tasikmalaya, West Java, which had been running for around four months.

The second case pertained to the detection of an international narcotics network in Kampung Ambon, West Jakarta, in November. One suspect was nabbed in connection with the case, while the dealers fled to Thailand.

As much as 389 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine originating from an international Middle Eastern network (Afghanistan-Aceh-Jakarta) was seized as evidence in the case.

The third case involved the discovery of a clandestine narcotics laboratory in Uluwatu, Bali. In connection with the case, the police arrested four suspects and put four Indonesian citizens on the wanted list.

Evidence confiscated in the case included millions of "happy five" pills, 132.9 kilograms of hashish and raw materials, 7,365 cartridge pods, and 17 production machines.

"With an estimated value of Rp1.52 trillion (US$ 90 million), which could save the lives of 1.4 million people," Prabowo informed.

In the last case, a Ukrainian citizen identified as Roman Nazarenko was arrested in Thailand for his connection to a hydroponic marijuana laboratory.

Evidence secured in the case included 6 thousand grams of crystal methamphetamine, 108 grams of cocaine, 10,181 grams of marijuana, 485 grams of hashish, 684 grams of mephedrone, and 520.032 kilograms of liquid or solid precursors.

"Besides enforcing the law against the perpetrators of drug crimes, we also continue to take firm action against other crimes that harm the community," Prabowo emphasized.
