Jakarta (ANTARA) - Commission II Chairman of the House, Rifqinizamy Karsayuda, stated that he would discuss the provisions on the number of presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs following the Constitutional Court (MK) ruling that eliminated the nomination threshold.

He noted that the number of presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs should remain limited following the ruling, as an excessive number could be counterproductive to the quality of democracy in Indonesia.

"We understand that the Constitutional Court's ruling is final and binding. We will discuss it with the government regarding the follow-up to the Constitutional Court's ruling," Karsayuda remarked when contacted in Jakarta on Friday.

He affirmed that the core of MK's ruling contains two main points: the elimination of the "Presidential Threshold," or the nomination threshold to zero percent, and an invitation to the DPR and the government to form new norms.

He emphasized the need for constitutional engineering to ensure that the norms designed to revise Law Number 7 of 2017 regarding the nomination requirements for presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs do not result in the liberalization of democracy in the current presidential system.

The discussion between the DPR and the government on the provisions regarding the number of presidential candidates will be held after the recess period in early 2025. Recess Period I of the 2024-2025 Session Year of the DPR RI started on December 6, 2024, and will end on January 20, 2025.

Earlier, the MK decided to remove the provisions on the minimum percentage threshold for proposing presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs (presidential threshold) in Article 222 of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections, as it contradicts the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia.

"Granting the petition of the applicants in its entirety," MK Chief Justice Suhartoyo remarked while reading out the verdict Number 62/PUU-XXII/2024 in the Plenary Courtroom of the MK, Jakarta, on Thursday (Jan 2).

The deleted article contained the requirements for nominating presidential and vice-presidential candidates, which required support from a political party or coalition of political parties that have 20 percent of seats in the Indonesian House of Representatives or have secured 25 percent of the valid national votes in the previous legislative election.
