Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia, as a full member of BRICS, will bridge the interests of developing countries and the Indo-Pacific Region, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono.

“And Indonesia will continue to be active in preventing the escalation of geo-economic and geopolitical rivalries,” he said while delivering his annual statement here on Friday.

Sugiono stated that the country’s BRICS membership was not achieved overnight, rather, it is the result of its consistency and steadfastness in carrying out diplomacy throughout the years.

Indonesia’s accession to BRICS, he added, is also an embodiment of its independent and active foreign policy.

In addition to BRICS, the minister emphasized that Indonesia will continue to play an active role in other multilateral groups such as the G20, APEC, IPEF, MIKTA, and the CPTPP.

“Now, we are also in the process of acceding as a full member of the OECD,” Sugiono pointed out.

Indonesia was officially recognized as the bloc’s newest member on Monday.

Brazil, the 2025 BRICS chair, congratulated Indonesia on its accession and praised the country’s support for the priority issues brought up during Brazil’s chairmanship.

The BRICS alliance, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and four other member countries, in addition to Indonesia, has emerged as a global bloc with the potential to significantly change the world's economic map and order.

BRICS also has 12 partner countries, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Turkey, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

Globally, BRICS accounts for 37.82 percent of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP) and 48 percent of the world’s total population.
