Recognizing the importance of emphasizing the national ideology of Pancasila in Indonesia's diplomacy, the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP) has urged the government to promote values of humanity, mutual cooperation, and consensus at the international level.
Darmansjah Djumala, a BPIP Board of Experts member for foreign relations strategy, praised Foreign Minister Sugiono for reinforcing Pancasila as the foundation of Indonesia’s foreign policy during his annual press address on Friday (Jan. 10).
“It showed that every step of government policies, including foreign policy, must have Pancasila as its basis,” Djumala stated in his written statement on Sunday.
Djumala, who previously served as Indonesia's ambassador to Austria and the United Nations, commended the foreign minister’s commitment to "Pancasilaist diplomacy," which aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s Astacita (Eight Missions) principles.
Moreover, the first tenet of the Astacita reads “Strengthening Pancasila ideology, democracy, and respect for human rights”.
Sugiono’s emphasis on Pancasila in Indonesia’s diplomacy also comes at the right time following the recognition of Sukarno’s “To Build the World Anew” speech archive to UNESCO’s Memory of the World in 2023, the BPIP official opined.
The speech, delivered before the UN General Assembly on September 30, 1960, revealed the Indonesian national founder’s vision of Pancasila values becoming a solution to global issues.
Djumala viewed this recognition as an opportunity for Indonesian diplomats to advocate for Pancasila values on the international stage.
“Indonesian diplomats are now responsible for being creative in capitalising the Memory of the World status to promote the noble values of Pancasila as an inspiration to address global issues through mutual assistance and consensus in international forums,” the former ambassador remarked.
