Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has reported a continued decline in online gambling transactions based on quarterly evaluations in 2024, indicating that the government's efforts to combat online gambling have been effective.

The evaluations were conducted using data from the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK).

During a meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday, the ministry's Director General of Digital Space Supervision, Alexander Sabar, stated that online gambling transactions reached Rp21 trillion (around US$1.29 billion) in the first quarter of 2024.

The value declined to Rp16 trillion in the second quarter and Rp4 trillion in the third quarter.

Sabar explained that his office is responsible for monitoring and blocking access to websites, content, and applications related to online gambling; conducting research and analysis of new online gambling modes; collecting keywords related to online gambling; and using AI to filter such content.

"We also propose blocking phone numbers and messaging applications suspected of being used for communications and transactions related to online gambling," he revealed.

From 2017 to January 21, 2025, the ministry has addressed 5,707,952 items of online gambling content on various websites and applications in Indonesia's digital space.

To maintain its commitment to eradicating online gambling, Sabar stated that his staff were required to sign an integrity pact.

His office has also conducted integrity assessments for each team tasked with blocking content, ensuring they can combat online gambling effectively and in alignment with the government's vision.
