Indonesia's PT SSE (Sentra Surya Ekajaya) and France's Texelis on Thursday launched the P2 Tiger APC 4x4 armored vehicle, which was specially built to meet the requirements of the Indonesian Army.
"We fully support this kind of initiative," the ministry's director general of defense potential, Major General Piek Budyakto, said at the launch event.
"The government is committed to strengthening the defense industry ecosystem with policies that support innovation in international partnerships and the development of local technology," he added.
According to him, efforts to develop the domestic defense industry are in line with the directive of Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin for end-users, such as the Indonesian military, to use domestic products.
"We are currently improving our domestic products in the defense industry. We try to increase the local content of our defense industry," he added.
Currently, the domestic content level in defense and security equipment is only around 40 percent against the target of 70 percent.
Budyakto said he believes the target can be achieved following the enactment of the 2019 Job Creation Law.
"We have been trusted to produce our own defense and security equipment in the form of combat vehicles for our military. We can also adopt the technology from foreign countries, for example, France," he added.
The P2 Tiger is a personnel transport vehicle, weighing 18 tons, that was designed and manufactured by PT SSE at the company's factory in Tangerang.
The company carried out the full assembly of all components with support from Texelis—a French company producing the Serval 4x4 APC for the French Army—for the integration of the mobility platform.
Compared to the company's previous product, the new P2 Tiger has better engine power, larger capacity and space, and better maneuverability due to its new independent suspension.
The new P2 Tiger has STANAG 4569 level 2 to 4 protection, depending on the configuration. Its maximum GVW is 18 tons with a base weight of 14 tons.
