Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is prioritizing seaweed as one of its five flagship commodities to meet rising global demand.

Alongside seaweed, the other four commodities being prioritized as champion commodities are shrimp, tilapia, crab, and lobster, Director of Seaweed at the Directorate General of Aquaculture, KKP, Nono Hartanto, remarked during an online seminar in Jakarta on Monday.

Hartanto noted that global demand for seaweed is projected to grow steadily. "Data from Seaweed Forecast and the World Bank confirm this upward trend," he stated adding that global demand for seaweed could reach 40-43 million tons by 2029.

The ready-to-eat food sector is expected to remain the largest consumer, accounting for over half of total demand, while the aquaculture feed market is poised for significant expansion.

The ministry revealed that the government's blue economy initiatives spurred a 13.64 percent increase in aquaculture production compared to the previous year, particularly for key export commodities such as shrimp, seaweed, and saltwater tilapia.

In 2024, the total farmed fish production reached 6.37 million tons, marking a 13.64 percent increase from the previous year. Seaweed production reached 10.80 million tons, reflecting a growth of 10.82 percent from the previous year.

This production increase was followed by a positive trend in the fish farmers' average income, which rose to Rp5,136,547, a 4.55 percent increase as compared to previous years. This value is higher compared to the City/Region Minimum Wage (UMK) in several regions.
