Jakarta (ANTARA) - Two vessels caught fire while fueling at an Ancol pier in North Jakarta on Saturday evening (8 Feb), killing a crew member and injuring five others, according to the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency.

Technical errors might have caused the fire that broke out at around 10 p.m. local time during the fueling process, the agency stated.

Around 15 minutes after the fire was reported, the agency said nine fire trucks and a dozen firefighters were deployed to the accident site, and the blaze could have been extinguished at around 10:25 p.m. local time.

The metropolitan city of Jakarta has borne witness to several deadly and catastrophic fires in the past four years.

Glodok Plaza in West Jakarta experienced a fire on January 15, 2025, and caused dozens of people to die. As of February 5, the police had only been able to identify seven victims from body bags.

On the evening of Thursday, April 19, 2024, seven people were killed in a fire reportedly ravaging a shop building in Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta.

Bodies of the seven victims were all found inside a room on the shop building's second story, according to local police.

On the evening of Friday, March 3, 2023, a major fire broke out at the Plumpang Pertamina Depot in Koja Sub-district, North Jakarta, killing 33 people.

On the evening of Saturday, October 22, 2022, a fire razed several houses in Pademangan Sub-district, North Jakarta, leaving three people dead.

According to the Pademangan police, the fire claimed the lives of a 28-year-old mother and her two children aged 10 and five years.

In another incident that occurred in the early morning of Saturday, February 26, 2022, three people were killed when a fire gutted two buildings on Swadaya Street in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta.

The victims who died in the fire comprised a 37-year-old woman, a three-year-old son, and a three-month-old toddler, according to the South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency.
