Jakarta (ANTARA) - State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir said the appointment of an active member of the Indonesian Military (TNI) as president director of state logistics firm Bulog is meant to bring in a fresh perspective.

According to the minister, the appointment is a strategic move to achieve the country's goal of food self-sufficiency.

Major General Novi Helmy Prasetya was selected for the post based on a study on increasing the absorption of three million tons of rice equivalent.

"We need to refresh our approach and carry out this assignment maximally. We would conduct a review based on the targets that have been given," he said here on Monday.

He explained that to support the absorption of three million tons of rice equivalent, it is essential to develop the food ecosystem.

According to data from Bulog, the current rice equivalent absorption rate is still relatively low. Therefore, it needs to improve to maximize the absorption rate.

He explained that the most important goal is to achieve rice sufficiency and optimize grain absorption.

He said the decision to appoint a president director who is also an active TNI member was made to inject a new perspective and help achieve food self-sufficiency.

The SOEs Minister earlier issued a decree, numbered SK-30/MBU/02/2025, on February 7, 2025, to appoint Major General Prasetya as the new president director of Perum Bulog in place of Wahyu Suparyono.

The decree also terminated the service of Iryanto Hutagaol as finance director.

Prasetya, who previously served as territorial assistant to the TNI Commander, will begin his term at Bulog with Hendra Susanto, who has been appointed as the new finance director.
