The proposal would apply if a defendant admits to all charges after the indictment is read. The case would then proceed through the usual judicial process by a panel of judges, simplifying case registration.
"Provided the trial is conducted swiftly, such as by limiting its duration," said Prim Haryadi, chairperson of the MA Criminal Chamber, during a meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Wednesday.
This measure aims to improve judicial efficiency through a special channel mechanism, Haryadi added.
He said the MA has also proposed including electronic trials in the draft bill, arguing that rapid advancements in the judicial sector make them necessary, even after the pandemic.
Haryadi noted that some court buildings are located far from detention centers or police stations.
He added that if a provision for electronic trials is included in the draft bill, it should involve law enforcement officials.
"The Supreme Court has issued MA Regulation No. 4 of 2020 regarding the administration of criminal cases in court electronically," Haryadi stated.
DPR Commission III Chair Habiburokhman stated that KUHAP must be revised as the new Criminal Code (KUHP) will take effect on January 1, 2026.
