Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro stressed the need for high-quality and relevant medical education to overcome the country's challenges.

The minister made this statement at the 32nd Congress of the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, on Thursday (February 13).

"High-quality and relevant medical education is key to solving the strategic challenges Indonesia faces as it works towards Golden Indonesia and a healthy Indonesia," he noted in the ministry's press statement released on Friday.

Minister Brodjonegoro stated that medical education should prioritize better access, quality, relevance, and community impact.

He noted that this aligns with President Prabowo Subianto's strategic AstaCita mission for developing the nation.

To that end, he announced that his ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Health on selecting medical students for specialist and subspecialist programs in medical schools.

"This symbolizes the synergy between the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology and the Ministry of Health. Apart from achieving Golden Indonesia, I want to add a new goal, a Healthy Indonesia 2045," he stated.

He pointed out that Indonesia is currently facing new strategic challenges, such as climate change, a slowing global economy, a limited demographic bonus period, technological disruption, artificial intelligence (AI), and potential new pandemics.

He also highlighted that of all occupations today, only doctors will not be replaced by AI.

"However, doctors who do not use AI could be replaced by those who do," he remarked.

Hence, Minister Brodjonegoro emphasized the need for strong collaboration between the medical education system and healthcare services to implement the roadmap to a Healthy Indonesia 2045, starting with optimizing the preventive approach in public health.
