Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is continuing to talk to US technology giant Apple, asking it to comply with the domestic component level (TKDN) requirement to market the iPhone 16 in the country.

According to Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, the ministry’s technical team has intensified discussions with Apple representatives — it held three meetings in the last one week—regarding the extension of the TKDN certification for the iPhone 16.

Intensive negotiations with Apple are needed to make sure that Indonesia gets the benefits it deserves from the sale of Apple products in the domestic market.

“I think the negotiation has been running well,” Minister Kartasasmita said after the kick-off of the Technology Pioneers and Indonesia 4.0 event here on Wednesday.

In January 2025, Apple’s vice president of global policy, Nick Amman, visited Jakarta to meet with the Indonesian government and share the company’s investment plan as well as resolve issues regarding the sales of the iPhone 16 in the country.

During negotiations with the Industry Ministry, the US technology giant agreed to start the construction of a vendor factory in Indonesia, which will supply 65 percent of AirTag needs worldwide.

However, according to Kartasasmita, with an initial investment of US$1 billion, the project will not open up entry for the iPhone 16 in the domestic market.

To sell the iPhone 16 in Indonesia, Apple has been encouraged to pursue its first investment scheme of establishing production facilities or factories related to the manufacturing of mobile phones, handled computers, and tablets, which is a requirement for obtaining the TKDN certification.
