Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto confirmed that President Prabowo Subianto will offer amnesty to prisoners who meet the specified criteria.

“The numbers vary because, as we approach Eid al-Fitr, there will definitely be remissions and others. However, we ensure that it will be granted to those who truly meet the classifications,” Andrianto stated at the Cipinang Detention Center here on Tuesday.

He also emphasized that remissions cannot be granted to corrupt individuals and drug traffickers due to the wide-ranging impact of their crimes on society.

However, remissions will be given to drug addicts and abusers who are required to undergo rehabilitation.

In addition, amnesty will be granted to pregnant inmates and those caring for children under the age of 3. However, the type of crime committed by the inmates will be taken into account.

“Elderly individuals over 70 years old and those with chronic illnesses will also receive amnesty,” he remarked.

He stated that the assessment process will continue until the data on the recipients of amnesty is truly valid and meets the criteria, thereby preventing any incorrect decisions by President Prabowo.

Earlier, during a working meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday (February 19), Andrianto reported that 19,337 inmates have qualified for amnesty based on the results of the verification and initial assessment.

On the other hand, 20,589 prisoners did not pass the verification. Before this verification and assessment phase, the initial plan was to grant amnesty to 44,495 inmates.

Minister Andrianto stated that the number of inmates who pass the verification may still fluctuate, considering that there will be special remissions for religious holidays and integration programs in the near future.
