In response to community complaints about air pollution, Hanif conducted an inspection on Monday to ensure compliance with environmental norms mandated by environmental documents related to operational activities in the zone.
"Not only this Marunda bonded zone but we will also review other areas that are contributing to air pollution,” he noted.
In addition to the Marunda bonded zone, the ministry conducted an inspection and installed an environmental monitoring board for an iron industry in Tangerang, Banten, which contributed to air pollution in the surrounding area.
During a joint inspection with several members of Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Hanif also announced plans to conduct clean-up activities before the dry season to reduce pollution sources in the Jabodetabek area.
"We will continue this effort as the sources of pollution have been identified at hundreds of points in Jabodetabek. It will potentially cause unhealthy air during the upcoming dry season,” he remarked.
Improvements will be carried out carefully, particularly in the Marunda bonded zone, which operates vital business activities and upholds the sustainability aspect of environmental management.
He acknowledged that the use of coal in various industries and exhaust fumes from motor vehicles remain significant challenges in addressing air pollution in the Jakarta area and its surroundings.
However, a long-term process is required to resolve such an issue.
As a short-term solution, Hanid highlighted that the government will strengthen the enforcement of pollution prevention measures as outlined in the environmental documents owned by the company.
"In the short term, we will make corrections related to the implementation of environmental documents. If the environmental documents are not strong enough, we will strengthen them,” he remarked.
