This was conveyed by Yudhoyono after a meeting on national waste handling and management at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday. The meeting was led by President Prabowo.
While delivering a statement to the press, the minister said that the issue of waste is a concern and a priority for the President.
At the meeting, Prabowo highlighted the problem of waste, which is a challenge because public awareness and concern are needed to overcome it.
Through the waste management acceleration task force, the President is seeking to initiate a national movement to ensure a waste-free environment.
In addition to building public awareness, the government will focus on the application of technology and bolster infrastructure for handling waste from upstream to downstream.
The minister also highlighted the piling up of household waste at the Bantar Gebang Landfill, which is not only causing soil and air pollution but also polluting the environment and increasing disaster risk.
The government is seeking to ensure waste is managed well, starting from the integrated waste management sites to landfills.
"Waste is expected to be destroyed, and some of it can be buried, but we are primarily focusing on recycling," he informed.
He further said that the task force will evaluate the development of waste-to-energy plants.
President Prabowo summoned the environmental activist group Pandawara Group to the Presidential Palace on Tuesday to discuss environmental and waste issues, among other things.
The Pandawara Group said that during the meeting, they agreed to prepare a large-scale activity to tackle the issue of waste from upstream to downstream.
